The Contents Analysis of Early School-aged Clients¡¯ Game Behaviors in Game Play Therapy

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively explore game behaviors in game play therapy amongst early school-aged children suffering from internal and external problems. Data was collected from 172 game play therapy sessions of 35 children. Analysis of the data was conducted by content analysis procedures as outlined by Krippendorff(2004). The results were classified into 5 dimensions and 24 categories. Cognitive strategies contain ¡®difficulty of anticipation and making a plan¡¯, ¡®lack of flexibility¡¯, ¡®distraction¡¯, ¡®lack of comprehension¡¯, ¡®lack of expression¡¯, and ¡®attribution of the failure to external factors.¡¯ Follow the rules includes a ¡®lack of willingness to follow rules¡¯, ¡®impulsivity¡¯. Frustration tolerance includes ¡®discomfort in success¡¯, ¡®exaggerated reactions to success and failure¡¯, ¡®improper expressions of failure¡¯, ¡®reversing the result¡¯, sensitivity to checking scores¡¯, ¡®ritual behaviors¡¯, and ¡®physical reactions.¡¯ Ego restriction includes ¡®don¡¯t even try¡¯, ¡®give up¡¯, ¡®shift to other forms of play quickly¡¯, and ¡®lowering of performance.¡¯ Interpersonal functioning includes ¡®playing alone¡¯, ¡®behaving dependently¡¯, ¡®rejecting the feedback¡¯, ¡®a lack of trust¡¯, and ¡®a lack of reciprocity.¡¯ This study has practical implications in that it verified game values of assessment and diagnosis and provided basic data which could help the child client more effectively.
